September 3, 2014: The sad day for Ladies' Code fans, friends and family.

On September 3, 2014, at around 01:20 KST, in South Korea, the group, along with their manager and a stylist, was travelling in a van that crashed into a protective wall in the vicinity of the Singal junction on the Yeongdong Expressway in the direction of Incheon.

We have been trying to pin down the exact location of the accident, and from the information released by news agencies, it must have happened somewhere around here

Unfortunately, the Street View data from Google for that area is already 4 to 5 years old, and as you can see in the pictures, the expressway is in the midst of a reconstruction, which might explain why we couldn't find the same highway signs.
  • It's on the Yeongdong Expressway, around 43 kilometers from Incheon.
  • The intersection you can see some 500 meters in the direction of Incheon crosses expressway 1 (Gyeongbu Expressway), which can also be seen on the sign in the SBS video.
  • If you move back some 300 meters in the opposite direction, you will see some noise barriers being constructed which have a striking resemblance to the ones seen in the pictures.

Ladies’ Code‘s company, Polaris Entertainment, talked about both the vehicle used in the fatal crash and the driver of the van.
“Ladies’ Code’s vehicle was driven for the first time that day. We are extremely upset that this accident occurred on the first use of the new vehicle from a rental car company that was used to replace the existing management vehicle, which had been experiencing problems.”
It has been said that the driver of the group’s van, Mr. Park, is not new to driving nor is he a new employee to the company. Mr. Park’s exact experience has not been confirmed, but he has been revealed to be an experienced manager of many years for Polaris Entertainment. The agency’s reps shared, “During his continuous activities as a road manager, he has not experienced any particular accidents.”
The police were investigating criminal charges against the driver and wanted the black box for evidence.
The police stated, “First, we’re investigating whether the driver was speeding. However, the speed mark didn’t show up due to the rain, and the location of the crash site does not have CCTV. As there were no passing vehicles at the time, we haven’t been able to secure a black box.”
The police later found the black box, and it was discovered that the airbags in the van did not deploy. Then the fire department revealed that the driver may have taken evasive measures to avoid another car.
The Yongin Fire Department was present at the scene of the fatal car accident on September 3 at Singal Intersection of Yeondong Expressway heading towards Incheon at 1:20AM. According to the fire department, the car in front of Ladies’ Code’s van began skidding due to the rain, and the driver of Ladies’ Code van attempted to avoid collision.
Although there had been speculations that Ladies' Code's RiSe, Sojung, and EunB had been ejected from the car because they hadn't been wearing seatbelts, the fire department revealed that all three had still been in the car when they arrived at the scene of the accident.

KBS 2TV's 'Entertainment Relay' reported on the girls' accident, and they interviewed the fire department that had been dispatched on site. They said, "About 3-4 women [Ashley, Zuny, and staff] were standing outside, and there were three women unconscious in the car [Sojung, EunB, RiSe]. All three had no consciousness. [In the case of RiSe], she was bleeding from her head, and had injuries on her face. We couldn't detect her breath or pulse, so we did CPR right away."

The accident led to the death of member EunB, while the remaining six passengers were injured and rushed to the hospital. Two of the members, Sojung and Rise, were taken to the Catholic University of Korea St. Vincent's Hospital in Suwon, listed under critical condition. Sojung's condition has since been reported as stabilized, however Rise died in Ajou University Hospital four days after the incident on September 7, after being in a coma since the accident and undergoing numerous surgeries.
At around 1:20 AM in South Korea, the girls’ van ran into a protective wall in the vicinity of the Singal Intersection on the Yeongdong Expressway in the direction of Incheon. As a result of the accident, EunB passed away while the remaining six passengers were injured and rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation with reports saying that the vehicle had lost a rear wheel. The group's label, Polaris Entertainment stated in an official statement that the group were returning to Seoul from a schedule in Daegu and, at around Suwon, the back tire of the van falling out and rainy conditions caused the van to skid and crash into the protective wall.

According to reports, the car, which the company had rented, spun out of control after the back wheel came off. How does a back wheel come off without anybody realizing that it was loose enough to do so? Who is checking these vehicles prior to driving and making sure that they're safe? Is that the fatigued manager's responsibility, too? Both the vehicle and the driver should have been checked that night. If EunB had worn a seatbelt, she may have survived; but if the vehicle and driver were in better condition, the accident would have never happened in the first place.

In the wake of member EunB's death, the song "I'm Fine Thank You" from the group's second EP Pretty Pretty topped on several real-time music charts including Melon, Bugs, Genie, Monkey3, and Olleh after fans of the group posted messages on online communities and SNS encouraging people to listen to the song as a tribute and to fulfill the late singer's dream of ranking first on the music charts.

Ladies’ Code never really took the K-pop world by storm, as hard as they tried, but the loss of two of the group’s members has unexpectedly shaken it to its very foundations.
