Traffic accidents and the K-Pop Idols

With the large increase in popularity of Korean celebrities internationally, a large amount of attention has been drawn to the large number of celebrity traffic accidents.

Just last month, Ladies' Code was involved in a car accident that shocked the K-Pop community. The group were returning to Seoul after a schedule at Daegu, when back tire of the van fell out and ran into a wall, which caused the death of member EunB at 1:30AM.  She passed away at the scene and Rise after she has been unconscious for four days.

Solo singer Eru left a message to entertainment companies while leaving his condolences to EunB: "Ah.. It's such a shame. I offer my deepest condolences. If you are to assign them a hectic schedule, you must take care of them. The safety of those who are assets to your company should be more important than their schedules. No matter how bothersome it may be, you must always check the condition of the car being mobilized and the driver who is to drive. To all the managers in the entertainment industry."

The Korea Herald reported that EunB and Rise were not wearing their seatbelt when the car went out of control.

The most recent tragedy has fueled new discussions about holding entertainment companies and sasaeng fans accountable for the safety and well-being of the stars. It's common K-Pop knowledge by now that entertainment companies overwork their idols to death. K-Pop and K-Drama celebrities clearly don't get enough sleep because of their ambitious companies and their heavy workload.
Many celebrities--both idols and non-idols alike--have suffered from car accidents probably because their managers tried to rush them to their schedules and couldn't focus due to lack of sleep. During promotions, companies eager to tackle whatever chance they have at fame and fortune overload idols' schedules so much to the point that many celebrities start and end their day in the hours of dawn. The result: they become anxious, stressed, and sleep-deprived.

Over the past few years, there have been several high profile car accidents that were caused, at least in part, due to the over-packed schedule of idols. Sasaeng ("stalker") fans have also caused several accidents by pursuing idols' cars.

There has been more than one incident in the past of managers causing accidents while driving idols to events and Idols and other celebrities with overload schedules was too exhausted to even drive a car. Here are some of the incidents:

  2. Though this is not something new but all cases presented all-together will definitely raise some questions. When I worked with a Los Angeles DUI attorney, I saw my boss handling celebrity DUI cases now and then. I don’t know why people who have got fame put so many things on line when they do drunk driving.
